私は65才で大阪大学文学部研究生となり、若山映子、圀府寺司両先生のご指導を得て西洋美術研究を「生涯学習」として始めました。その後、神戸大学文学部大学院教授宮下規久朗先生に私淑しています。その中で、多くの美術解説や批評が注目しないか、あるいは「観て観ない」振りをしている表象の存在に気づきました。「王様は裸」子供の目で得た「知見」を、以下の各ページで述べてみます。

『岩窟の聖母』に秘められた処女懐胎への疑い

レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチが描いた2枚の『岩窟の聖母』。1枚目はパリのルーヴルに、20年後の2枚目はロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーに、いずれもその美術館の至宝になっています。光輪やヨハネのアトリビュートである杖のあるなしなどでルーヴルの所蔵作品を重視する説が有力ですが、私はナショナル・ギャラリー所蔵作品の方が、レオナルドがこの作品に込めた考えを、より明確に見て取れると思っています。
ヘロデ王の追求を逃れるエジプト行の途中、聖母子が身を寄せヨハネと遭遇した岩窟は、通常は言及されることがないのですが、そそり立つ中央の岩が明らかに男根の形であり睾丸まで付け加えられています。右側には女陰と見て取れる洞窟も描かれています。この表象は、ナショナル・ギャラリー所蔵作品（下図）の方がルーヴル所蔵作品より鮮明です。いったい何故レオナルドはこのように描いたのでしょうか。
レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ作品の解説では一例（注）を除き、あえて言及されることがないこの表象は何を示しているのか。私は万物のあり方に関心を抱き、数々のスケッチを残した科学者レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチが、カトリックの教義「処女懐胎」に抱いた疑問を伝えたものと考えます。妊娠するには男女の交渉が関係します。出世作『受胎告知』『最後の晩餐』などキリスト教関係の作品が多いレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチですが、科学者としての本心は別のところにあったのではないでしょうか。（注）リン・ピクネット「アウトサイダーの肖像～ダ・ヴィンチについてのさらなる考察」1997年、ダン・バースタイン編「ダ・ヴィンチコードの真実」沖田樹梨亜訳、2004年（株）竹書房、113～114ページ所載。

この書物の3分の1はレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチについての考察を述べています。「結論を言っておくと、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチは無神論者です。」（同書67ページ）、≪岩窟の聖母≫については「結論を言いましょう。洞窟というのは大地の子宮だとレオナルドは考えていました。」（同書108ページ）と断言されています。しかし岩の形状が男女の性器を表象しているとの記述はこの書物にありません。
